From skate parks to a 4.5 star hotel and a CBD facelift, here are the multimillion-dollar mega projects that will shape Caloundra within coming years.

Plans for a new town square, Otranto Ave street park, increased mixed-use development, a gateway into Bulcock St and improved community facilities will all help to shape the Caloundra CBD.

A new regional art gallery, town square and library are proposed in a major revitalisation project for the Caloundra CBD.

Part of the project includes repurposing the Caloundra Administration Building into a new district library.

Since 2017 some progress has been made including amendments to the planning scheme to increase commercial and residential development.

Some streetscape works have also been completed including the installation of art sculptures, canopy lighting features and contemporary street furniture.

The council will start the second phase of community engagement in May by releasing updated concept plans and asking "Have we got it right?".

Preliminary design and feasibility for the new Caloundra District Library is nearing completion.

Development of a business case for the new Caloundra Regional Gallery is also due to start in coming months.

Sea Caloundra

Caloundra's main street is poised for an up-market retail and hotel boost with construction expected to start next year on a $200 million high rise.

Sea Caloundra will feature 104 apartments in one 15-storey building and 140 units in a second 12-level tower overlooking the ocean from the prime Bulcock St site.

The up-market project will offer a mix of residential and holiday accommodation.

It was estimated to generate $347.4 million during the construction phase and an extra $73.3 million into the economy once completed.

Spokesman for the development and Place Properties director Syd Walker said the developers would work through conditions placed on the approval but expected to start construction next year.

Construction was likely to take 18 months.

Sugar Bag Road mountain bike trails

One of the Sunshine Coast's largest mountain bike trails is having a $1.32 million upgrade.

New trails, a pump trace, space for a cafe and bike hire are just some of the facilities being added to the Caloundra off Road Cycle Association's trails.

The improved facilities are being delivered over the coming year.

Department of Transport and Main Roads has released a video of the diverging diamond interchange after the recent opening of new lanes and access points.

Caloundra Rd to Sunshine Motorway

The Bruce Hwy is being upgraded to six lanes between Caloundra Rd and the Sunshine Motorway at a cost of about $930 million.

The project includes major upgrades to both interchanges and a two-way service road for local traffic on the western side of the highway, between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist Drive.

It involves transforming the Caloundra Rd interchange into Australia's first diverging diamond interchange.

It is expected to be completed mid-2021, weather permitting.

Sunshine Coast Council has revealed concept designs of transport options for the Sunshine Coast Mass Transit Plan.

Mass Transit Action Plan

Sunshine Coast Council is exploring options for a mass transit solution between Maroochydore and Caloundra, also known as the "enterprise corridor".

Brisbane firm Articulous is due to deliver a community engagement strategy this year on the Preliminary Business Case and Options Analysis.

Light rail and a rapid bus network are two options on the table.

Caloundra Transport Corridor upgrade

More than $18 million in road upgrades are planned to reduce congestion and travel time around Caloundra.

The Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade involves two projects by the Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

It includes the council's widening of Third Ave, Oval Ave and Gosling St as well as the State Government's adjacent Third Ave to Nicklin Way extension.

Aura

A 2350 hectare block west of Caloundra will one day be home to 50,000 people as Stockland continues work on its $5 billion Aura development.

The masterplanned community is rapidly increasing the number of people moving to the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.

Early 2021 the first of 4000 new blocks for Aura's third suburb - named Banya - were put to the market, two years ahead of schedule.

The community also reached a milestone this year with the opening of Baringa State High School in January.

Nirimba District Sports Facility

Sporting clubs will benefit when a $5 million facility opens at Nirimba this year.

Construction started on the 7.5ha Nirimba Sports Complex in August last year.

The facility will have four full-sized rugby fields, two cricket fields, four netball courts, cricket practice nets and shaded spectator seating.

The development is part of the Aura Sports Network Plan, prepared by Stockland in consultation with Sunshine Coast Council and Economic Development Queensland.

It is located next to the future Nirimba State Primary School.

The draft master plan for the 75ha Honey Farm Road Sport and Recreation Precinct includes hard court playing surfaces, recreation and event spaces, soccer fields, cricket nets, disc golf course, dog parks, skate park, playgrounds and a fitness station.

Honey Farm Road Sports Park

A 75ha site opposite the Sunshine Coast Turf Club will be an important part of the future of sport and recreation on the Sunshine Coast.

The Honey Farm Sports Park draft master plan will guide development of formal and informal sport, leisure and recreation activities at the site on the northern side of Caloundra Rd.

Development will be staged in-line with budget availability.

Dicky Beach skate park

A 20-year-old "iconic" skate park will be demolished in coming weeks to allow construction to start on a new facility.

Stage one of Sunshine Coast Council's Dicky Beach Precinct Plan will start on Monday as part of a long-term revitalisation project.

A council spokesman confirmed there was $1.62 million allocated for the first stage of the works.

It includes a new skate park, public amenities, picnic shelter, beach shower, pathways, lighting, disabled parking spaces, seating and landscaping.

Shelly Beach to Moffat Beach survey

Sunshine Coast Council is surveying residents to gain views for the Shelly Beach to Moffat Beach Coastal study.

Residents can have their say at Eleanor Shipley Park, Moffat Beach, on Saturday February 27 from 9am - 12pm.
