36 CQ community groups share in $150,000 worth of grants
VOLUNTEER groups in Capricornia will benefit from $150,000 worth of funding from the Federal Government as National Volunteers Week draws to a close.
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry praised the work volunteers play in the community and announced 36 groups from the Rockhampton, Clermont, Moranbah, Yeppoon, Sarina, Pioneer Valley and Mackay regions would reap the just rewards.
Ms Landry has been to various community groups in the last few days and has seen first-hand the dedication and hard-work the groups do.
"I think it's really important, we are just finishing volunteers week, our volunteers are very important to our community," Ms Landry said.
"Without them a lot of our organisations would fold, I have just talked to volunteers from Landcare in Yeppoon, who are some of the pillars of our society.
"They get out there, are selfless people and the more I get out into the community, the more I am impressed and see the work they do.
"They are the lifeblood of our community. They add much to the social fabric of our area and these 36 volunteer groups will receive grants of between $1,000 and $5,000."
In her announcement Ms Landry visited the Berserker PCYC Men's Shed who will collect a $5,000 grant.
"They are a fantastic organization, this group help young ones with behavioral problems and work with the PCYC to get these kids who have difficulties getting into the workforce," she said.
"Their age group go from 16-93, so there is a lot of knowledge here for the young fellas to learn from.
"These men's groups do some great projects and a lot of community work, with a low or no cost. The community does donate a bit of gear but they need funds to buy their own new gear."
The Turbull-Joyce Coalition Government has invested $20 million in Volunteer Week across the country in recognition of the valuable role they play in building more resilient and cohesive communities and supporting individual participation in community life.
