Miners plead for a halt to QLD uranium ban plans

THE mining industry has urged Queensland's new Labor Government to slow down on reported plans to reinstate a ban on uranium mining in the state.

Reports at the weekend indicated the new State Government was considering reinstating the ban that was reversed by the Newman government.

While no new uranium mines have started operating since the policy change, exploration has resumed in some areas of the state's north-west.

Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche has asked the government to consult the industry before making any final decisions.

He said instead of a "blanket ban", a better option was to "judge each project on its merits", or only in the north-west, where most valuable uranium reserves are found.
