New grants to give homeless help a boost

THE Queensland Government has launched a $2 million funding and grants program to encourage social start-ups and boost support providers helping homeless people.

Housing Minister Mick de Brenni said the Dignity First Fund would encourage some of the best and most creative ideas to prevent the homeless from missing out on simple things that most of us took for granted.

"We'll provide funding for existing homelessness services and social entrepreneurs and other community organisations to deliver innovative programs to assist those in need, as well as upgrade facilities that already help the homeless get through adversity with dignity," he said.

Figures show 19,831 Queenslanders were experiencing homelessness at the time of the last Census.
