Woman's struggle with alcohol inspires Ocsober push

TOOWOOMBA woman Kylie Hardgrave has detailed her struggle with alcoholism in an effort to garner support for the Ocsober fundraising event.

Ms Hardgrave, who moved to the city six weeks ago, referenced time previously spent travelling around south-west Queensland and working in bars when asked about her motivation for supporting Ocsober.

The 39-year-old said she noticed that pubs were often the hub of small towns and drinking alcohol was a big part of socialising.

"I'm just looking to promote that you can have fun without alcohol," Ms Hardgrave said.

She said she was a part of a support program in Toowoomba.

"If people are looking to do Ocsober as a group, that can be their support network."

Ms Hardgrave said her problem with alcohol began when she was getting into bars as a 16-year-old.

She said she would drink to the point of losing memory and could never predict what she would do when drunk.

Support programs for her addiction have long been a part of her life, with varying degrees of success.

She said she had "fallen off the wagon" before.

"It just wasn't cool not to drink.

"As someone who is older and someone who has had a lot more negativity in relation to alcohol, I've had to embrace the program.

"Now I realise my life is so much better without it."

Ocsober challenges adults to give up alcohol for the month of October and get their family, friends and work colleagues to support and sponsor them.

It is a fundraising initiative by the non-profit organisation, Life Education, that has provided drug, alcohol and health education for more than 30 years to children in schools all over Australia.

Early education about the effects of alcohol was something Ms Hardgrave supported.

"I think it is great."
