VIDEO: Animal management on mayoral candidate's agenda

MAYOR Margaret Strelow took the opportunity at the weekend's Mayoral Debate to reiterate the need for a new council pound.

Ms Strelow said a 20-module pound at Gracemere was an alternative solution to the current option.

"The half-truth in amongst all the politicking that was going on is that there were pups that were catching parvo at our pound that would not have if they were not impounded," she said.

"And when I really understood that was happening I apologised to you and I made sure that we addressed it immediately.

"What we have in place at the moment are temporary fixes."

But candidate Bruce Diamond said 20 modules at Gracemere was not an ideal solution.

"Twenty new modules at Gracemere is not going to fix the problem, or $400,000 allocated to the project," he said.

"We need to create an environment in the new pound that will be attractive to perspective buyers of animals that will want to take their family out there on Sunday and say, 'can we have a look at what you've got'."
