Aus Govt considers nutrition policy

MORE than 300 submissions have been sent in for the National Food Plan green paper and a nutrition plan for Australia is among the ideas the Federal Government is considering.

Numerous health groups have recently been pushing for Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig, who has led the food plan, to include diet and nutrition.

A spokeswoman for Mr Ludwig said the proposal for a national nutrition policy was "likely to be considered" as part of, or complementary to, the food plan.

While the plan was focussed on improving the national food supply chain and supporting a more sustainable industry, nutrition was one issue on which the green paper was seeking input.

While the food plan has garnered more than 300 submissions from organisations and individuals, very few farming groups have so far sent in their thoughts.

Among the few producer groups to have input into the plan was the New South Wales Farmers Association and the Apple and Pear Association, with notable exceptions AgForce Queensland, the National Farmers Federation and Cattle Council.

Mr Ludwig's spokeswoman said the government was considering all feedback as part of the next step in creating a white paper.
