Beware of online scammers of the heart this Valentines Day

TODAY might be the day when love is in the air, but the Office of Fair Trading is warning those looking for a relationship online to be wary of romance scams.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Jarrod Bleijie said scammers used online dating websites as a way to initiate contact with victims, hoping to exploit them for financial gain.

"These con artists aim to establish an emotional connection with their target in order to get them to lower their defences," Mr Bleijie said.

"They may profess undying devotion, but all they are really after is money or personal details which can be used to steal their victim's identity."
