Boyne Smelters will reduce roles
BOYNE Smelters Limited announced plans to reduce about 90 leader and support roles across the site yesterday.
The plans to restructure operations are being made to ensure the business can compete on a global level as it faces difficult market conditions.
BSL has commenced consultation with employees in roles that may be affected by the restructure with employees in these positions to be offered alternate roles or redundancies.
"The decision to reduce the size of our organisation has not been taken lightly. We will ensure all impacted employees are being provided appropriate support," acting general manager Joe Rea said.
Current apprenticeships will be honoured but there will be no new outside apprenticeships offered in 2013. Federal Member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd has directed his outrage at the Federal Government after the announcement.
"I am absolutely outraged that the government has simply chosen to turn a blind eye to the plight of the industry in Queensland. The government knows exactly what the challenges are," he said.
