Highway chase: Relative of alleged carjacker 'disappointed'
A RELATIVE of an alleged carjacker accused of causing chaos on the Bruce Hwy said he's "disappointed" but the man was "still family".
Dylan Matthew Hammond, 25, remains in a critical condition after being shot by specialist police and then run over by a caravan on the Bruce Hwy at the Sunshine Coast yesterday.
He allegedly launched a one-man crime spree yesterday morning that involved stabbing a woman and firing his gun when she refused to hand over her car keys.
A relative said he knew of Hammond's tough upbringing but was shocked to hear of the allegations
"I'm disappointed but … at the end of the day he's still family".
Police have said Hammond had been wanted by police for several weeks over a minor matter.
Friends say he was devastated when a relative took their life last year.
In the lead up to yesterday's incident Hammond was posting troubling Facebook messages.
"F**K THE WORLD!!!!;!," he wrote last week accompanying the post with a "F**k My Enemies" meme.
A close friend was also stunned by the allegations.
"That Dylan yesterday was not the same Dylan I know," they said.
Hammond's condition has deteriorated from stable to critical and he has been placed in an induced coma.
The bullet struck his upper thigh and hip area.
The incident stunned onlookers on the highway with one motorist telling her children to shut their eyes when Hammond was shot metres from them.
After he was shot by the Special Emergency Response Team, Hammond was struck moments later by a caravan travelling the highway.
No charges have yet been laid with police waiting for Hammond's condition to improve before interviewing him.
