Central Queensland unites to fight domestic violence

LIVINGSTONE Shire Council and the Women's Health Centre have teamed up to call for men across Central Queensland to unite in a stand against family violence as part of White Ribbon Day.

A White Ribbon Day lunch will be held on Friday,  November 27 at the Keppel Bay Sailing club to raise awareness about the prevention of violence against women and children.

Queensland Magistrate Colin Strofield will be the guest speaker at the event.

Magistrate Strofield is currently the presiding magistrate at the Specialist Domestic and Family Violence Court at Southport.

White Ribbon Ambassador and Councillor Nigel Hutton will also speak at the event.

"Council is absolutely committed to working with groups like the Women's Centre to raise the profile of White Ribbon Day within our region," Cr Hutton said.

"We want to engage with the boys and men in our community to talk openly about domestic and family violence to help change the attitudes and behaviours that lead to and perpetuate men's violence against women.

"This is a whole of community issue and it's only by working together we will ensure there is a cultural change in attitudes towards this social ill."

Manager of the Women's Health Centre Rockhampton Belinda Lindel said violence against women and children is a huge issue across Australia.

"Unfortunately, Central Queensland has one of the highest rates of domestic and family violence in the State and we're really pleased to be partnering with Livingstone Shire Council which shares our dedication to ending violence against women," she said.

"On average, one woman is killed in Australia every week as a result of partner violence and one in three women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime."
