Finals aspirants set for showdown
IT'S round two of the Rockhampton Leagues Club A-grade competition at Jardine Park tonight, at least if the weather holds off.
Things don't look too promising for what should be a testing night of netball with the clash of four of the teams likely to contest positions in the finals.
If all goes well the main match of the night will see a re-match of last year's grand final with Brothers Crimson against Colts Divas.
With just the grading rounds and one round proper completed, Crimson already looks to be the benchmark for the 2012 competition.
While the side has talent all over the court, it is a daunting task for opponents to try and stop not one but two of the tallest shooters in the competition.
In last year's A-grade Amee Brown was scoring at will but the arrival of Juanita Putman sees her in a new role at goal attack rather than goal shoot.
Her coach Tanya Shuker knows it is a big change of responsibility for Brown but is confident she will adapt to the position.
Playing against towering shooters won't deter Colts defender Danielle Wingard as that is the reason she has been drafted back into the
Capricorn Claws squad for this weekend's trip to Brisbane.
Another match with a taste of finals netball is the meeting between Bluebirds and Frenchville Brumbies.
Bluebirds had an indifferent grading round but now have most of their squad together and should be good enough to beat a Brumbies team still missing some of its talent.
While Crimson was expected to be a class side again, Brothers Fuchsia is proving to be competitive.
The side faces a Capricorn Coast Marlins team that, once it has all its players on court, is capable of making the finals and possibly the grand final.
The other match in the round is between RGS Magic and Angels Titans and this will provide a good measure of where these two teams are going to be on the ladder this year.
The announcement of the 2012 Stanwell development squad is an indicator that talented players don't just live in Rockhampton.
The squad, coached by Barcaldine's Lyn Jackson, contains players from Gladstone, Blackwater, Emerald and Barcaldine as well as Rockhampton.
