Gohdes scores goal in Kookaburras opening win
HOCKEY: Rockhampton's Matt Gohdes has scored a goal in the Kookaburras' 2-1 opening win against New Zealand at the Rio Olympics.
It was a hard-fought win for the Australian men's hockey team, which includes fellow Rockhampton products Mark Knowles (captain) and Jamie Dwyer, both of whom are playing in their fourth Olympic Games.
The Kookaburras first goal came via a penalty corner from Chris Ciriello eight minutes into the first quarter.
The goal from Gohdes, who is in his second Olympics, came in the second quarter as he finished off a ball fed by Dwyer following a quick steal from one of the New Zealanders.
New Zealand fought back in the second half, scoring in the first two minutes. They scored again with only minutes remaining, only to have the goal disallowed following a referral from the umpire.
The Kookaburras managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
Their next opponents are Spain.
