Hit commuter comedy returns with a surprising new duo
GETTING behind the wheel of a car in an LA studio for Squinters, Stephen Peacocke could have sworn he was in Sydney.
"We had the green screen going all around and I was looking at Broadway (shopping centre) and Sydney University zooming past me and then we'd finish for the day and you'd be driving down Santa Monica Boulevard. It was a bit disorienting," he tells The Guide.
The hit ABC comedy series follows a group of colourful characters on their daily commute to work for dispatch company Kosciusko. Peacocke joins the cast as Brett, the driver of Kosciusko's new American CEO Tina (Kristen Schaal).
Working with Tina Fey on the 2016 film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot gave the Dubbo native his first taste of improvising and he was happy to flex those muscles again in Squinters.
"Typically we'd shoot the scene as it was written and then Trent (the director) would tweak it and throw in lines. I'm really intrigued to see the final cut because I don't know which take is going to be used. We did some really crazy improvisation," he says.
"You would think it would be more nerve racking but it's a relief to do it. When you're improvising you have to listen to make sense of what's happening, and as long as you have a good understanding of your character you just go with it.
"Some things didn't make much sense but others were gold."
Season two of Squinters premieres on Wednesday, July 10 at 9pm on ABC-TV.
