Meeting okays show dates
YEPPOON Show Society has failed in an attempt to get its Rockhampton counterpart thrown out of the Queensland Agricultural Show Society.
Members of the Central Queensland sub-branch rejected the move which comes after the decision to shift the dates of the Rockhampton Show so it clashes directly with the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend berth when the Yeppoon Show has been held for decades.
Yeppoon Show president Brian Dorey said: "It used to be these things could be worked out directly over a gentleman's handshake.
"But it's a dog eat dog world out there, so we have been forced to take this action."
Gavin Smith, president of the CQ sub-branch, made up of 18 individual show societies, said a meeting had decided that Rockhampton Show could continue as a member and confirmed that it would be held at the same time as Yeppoon Show in 2012 and 2013.
"There will then be a review to decide how to proceed," he said.
Events such as wood-chopping will include the same competitors at both shows on different days, he said.
"It's not as though the towns are a long way apart. There can be compromises if they work together."
Cr Graeme Brady, chairman of the Rockhampton Show organising committee, said Rockhampton was happy to co-operate with Yeppoon.
But he predicted that both shows would be affected by Beef Australia next year.
"Our competitions will be held just a month after Beef Australia and I think some competitors will see it as the premier event and will drop the other shows."
