Mum tries to retrieve money as MMA Aussie Battlers go bust

FOR single mother Maree Walker, $250 is a lot of money.

But she was happy to pay for her son to register for the MMA Aussie Battlers competition in Yeppoon next month.

Things were all good until she heard rumours the event had been cancelled.

All she wanted to do was help support her Rockhampton-based son in his dreams to break into the fitness industry.

"I happily registered my son over the phone," said Ms Walker, who lives in Brisbane.

"I did request a receipt that day, but she (the organiser) said they were having difficulties printing out receipts."

Event organiser Andrea Yates said the business had gone bankrupt.

Ms Walker said a refund promised by Ms Yates had not been forthcoming.

She lodged a complaint with the Office of Fair Trading.

A statement from the Office of Fair Trading late yesterday said MMA Battlers Pty Ltd was currently a registered company, with Andrea Danjela Yates as its holder.

The statement said under the Australian Consumer Law it was an offence to take payment for services and then fail to supply that service within a reasonable time.
