Nerimbera eyes off record books after ninth title in 11 yrs
NERIMBERA Magpies Black have their sights on swooping into the record books with the club eying the title of Rockhampton football's most successful team.
A 46th minute goal from captain Kajal Tighe saw Nerimbera claim their ninth Football Rockhampton women's premiership in 11 years with a 2-1 grand final win over Bluebirds at Pilbeam Park on Friday night.
They have now equalled Nerimbera's first division men's team which won nine of 11 premierships between 1938-1948.
With the nucleus of the team turning out again in 2015 there is a possibility the Magpies could win a standalone 10th premiership and go into the record books.
"It's a wonderful achievement. It (winning again next year) would be nice - that would be really nice," Nerimbera captain and player of the match Kajal Tighe said.
Friday night's grand final win was nothing like the one which Nerimbera registered in 2013 with a 5-0 victory over Bluebirds.
Bluebirds headed into the contest as underdogs but a brilliant early goal from a retiring Alison Petersen saw her side take an early 1-0 lead.
Nerimbera hit back a few minutes later when the competition's leading goalscorer, Vicki Edwards, weaved her magic to score her 28th goal of the season and see the home team equalise.
Nothing separated the two sides heading into half-time before a miscued set play, titled "jelly fish", from the second-half restart broke the deadlock.
"We have this set play called jelly fish, but it didn't work really well," Tighe said.
"We pumped it long and wide and it went to one of their defenders and we cut it back into halfway and I took the ball to the 18-yard box and cracked it in."
Bluebirds tried all they could to claw a goal back and send the match into extra-time, but Nerimbera's defence held strong.
Tighe praised both teams for their performances.
"All the girls did so well, our defence was so good," the 22-year-old captain said.
"We had heaps of shots on goal but their keeper was amazing."
