New park draws inspiration from Moreton Bay islands

Nirimba has a new residential park – and it’s a stunner.

The 6850sq m Island Park along Frederick St has been designed to echo the beauty of the Moreton Bay islands.

It features piccabeen palms, coastal banksias, Moreton Bay figs, cotton trees and pandanus palms.

Nirimba is one of several newly established suburbs in the Caloundra south development area which aims to accommodate future suburban growth.

Stockland’s Aura Central is behind the residential development.

Project director Josh Sondergeld said the new green space made up 10 parks and playgrounds in the town.

“The park has been designed for the whole community to enjoy and offers elements for all age groups,” he said.

“From active recreation in the playground exploring the beach huts or the volleyball court to relaxing in a hammock under the shade of a tree or under the larger picnic shelter overlooking the park.”

The play space, covering about 1000sq m, is surrounded by a series of constructed mounds with timber beach huts.

Play equipment includes a hammock swing, rope swing, climbing net, rope and balance bridges and spinners and slides for younger users.

Mr Sondergeld said two large Moreton Bay figs within the play space would eventually spread to cover the area and become the natural feature of the park.

An active play zone comprises a custom beach volleyball court and kick about lawn.
