Park Avenue Hotel is Australia's Best Overall Hotel in 2013

DARBY Godwin would be a proud man today.

The Park Avenue Hotel he opened with wife Joan in 1960 has taken out a national award for excellence.

The PA won the Australian Hotels Association National Award for Excellence for the Best Overall Hotel of the Year - Regional

Frank Godwin is the owner of the hotel today and carrying on the tradition of great service forged by his parents.

Darby (late) and Joan built the hotel from scratch and it has gone through several changes throughout the years. That includes a $1million refurbishment in 1997, and a major upgrade in the past three years.

"We keep changing to what we think the industry needs and requires, like making a venue to cater for dinner," Mr Godwin said.

But it's all the hard work that the Godwins have put into the hotel, and their staff, which has seen them win the top award.

"We oversee operations and have fantastic staff; it's hard work but it pays off at the end of the day.

"We're very honoured to receive this very prestigious award.

"It's nice to be recognised through ACA and to be recognised from your peers," Mr Godwin said.

And running hotels seems to run in the family, with Frank's daughter Laura coming into the family business. "It's third generation working in the hotel industry now, with Laura helping out," he said.
