Police wait on Neerkol fire report

INVESTIGATIONS continue into the fire which destroyed a two-storey building at the abandoned Neerkol Orphanage outside Rockhampton on Tuesday night.

Detective Sergeant Steve Paskin from Rockhampton CIB yesterday said police were still waiting on forensic reports to determine the cause.

The fire broke out about 9.30pm, destroying what was the old girls dormitory.

Neerkol Orphanage closed in 1978 after operating for almost a century.

Its history is marred by allegations of sexual and physical abuse, and claims the young residents were used as medical guinea pigs.

After its closure as an orphanage, the Neerkol complex operated as a convention centre.

Stanwell Power Corporation acquired the property in December 2000.
