Prospective jurors for Patel trial may be polled

LAWYERS for former Bundaberg surgeon Jayant Patel are expected to apply this afternoon to poll prospective jurors as a way to detect any prior prejudices.

The Queensland first, if allowed, would enable Patel's defence team to vet any jurors for preconceived notions of guilt towards the man, whose case has received much publicity ahead of his trial.

Patel will face his first trial next Wednesday accused of the manslaughter of Mervyn Morris 75, who died on June 14, 2003, weeks after Patel removed part of his bowel.

He was refused a judge-only trial and an application for a permanent stay was dismissed.

The Crown and defence lawyers spent most of Thursday morning arguing over the wording of particulars outlining the case against Patel.

Patel's lawyers are expected to argue about polling jurors on Monday afternoon.
