Rockhampton medical practice receives award

NORTHSIDE Plaza Medical Centre were awarded the Highly Commended award in Business category at the Queensland Reconciliation Awards held earlier this month.

The practice held Reconciliation Week dear to their hearts as they continue to focus on providing a safe medical home for local indigenous and islander people.

The medical centre's strong cultural focus earned them a place as finalists in the Queensland Reconciliation Awards after applying earlier this year.

The small business was up against some big competition with large companies such as Aurizon and BHP landing spots in the finals as well.

Dr Chamberlain said the centre had a strong focus on indigenous health since 2006 and also made conscious efforts to employ at least one indigenous person.

"We really took an interest in what we as a practice could do to try and improve the health of our first nation peoples because the figures are atrocious and Closing the Gap can only do so much.

"There are big holes in Closing the Gap where people can take advantage of it and not use it properly.

"So we decided that we would like to try to capture as much as we could of our indigenous and islander population as well as see what we could do with those who were already a part of our medical home to improve the outcomes for them.
