Rocky duo named in Queensland Blades squad

HOCKEY: Rockhampton's Mark Knowles and Ashley Hennegan have been named in the 35-man Queensland Blades squad.

The final team will be named closer to the October 6 start of the 2018 Australian Hockey League.

The AHL - in which the Blades and their female equivalents, the Queensland Scorchers, will play teams from Australia's seven other states and territories - has a new format this year.

Games will be played from October 6-28 on a home-and-away basis at venues throughout Australia, with the finals at a to-be-determined central location from October 25-28.

The State Hockey Centre in Colmslie will host the Queensland versus Tasmania round on Sunday, October 21.

The 2018 AHL will be the final version of the current model before a revamped franchise league is launched for 2019.

The AHL is the Australia's top national hockey competition that provides an important and thrilling atmosphere for aspiring players to play alongside the country's most elite.

The Scorchers will be looking to regain their title after taking out the AHL Championship in 2015 and 2016, then losing the 2017 title in a penalty shoot-out to Victoria.

The Blades will also be looking to knock Victoria off the top spot.

Six sets of siblings have been named in the two Queensland squads - Hugh and Matthew Pembroke, Aidan and Joel Rintala, Renee and Jared Taylor, Dylan and Blake Wotherspoon, Savannah and Madison Fitzpatrick, and Jodie Kenny and Ian Schulz.

Kenny's husband, Shane, has also been named in the Blades squad.
