Schools shut down after fire threat closes in

AS THE catastrophic fire conditions continue a number of schools have been closed as a precaution.

There are now 36 emergency State Schools closure across the State including local school Wartburg State School.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said as a result of the Central Queensland bushfires and on the advice of emergency services, a number of state schools west of Rockhampton to Emerald have been closed early today to allow safe transport home in light of worsening weather conditions.

"The Department of Education is following the advice of emergency services in closing the schools and will always act in the interests of the safety of students and staff and their families," the spokesperson said.

"The department will continue to follow emergency services' advice and will keep the school communities informed of future developments."

Parents with children at catholic and independent schools in the area should check with their respective schools as to any particular local arrangements.

Parents with children who attend an early childhood education centre are asked to contact the centre if they are unsure as to whether it will be closed.

The department urges parents, families and children to not take risks, and be especially cautious during extreme weather events such as bushfires and heatwaves.
