Seven Rockhampton stars for national event

SEVEN Rockhampton junior cyclists have been rewarded for their performances at the recent Queensland championships with selection in the state team.

Cycling Queensland announced a 27-person squad of junior riders who will compete in under-15 and under-17 races at the national championships at Melbourne's DISC Velodrome from February 25-28.

Under-15 women's cyclists Danielle Ruff and Emma Green join under-17 men Bailey Goltz, Lachlan Mathers, Ethan Sladden and Reid Newell in the team.

Mathers blitzed the field at the Queensland championships at Chandler last month, winning gold in the under-17 men's 500m time trial, sprint, scratch race, keirin, points race and team sprint, and silver in the under-17 men's team pursuit with Ethan Sladden, Reid Newell and Bailey Goltz.

Cycling Queensland received a record number of expressions of interests for the team.

Cycling Queensland said riders did not make the selectors job an easy task with some outstanding performances at recent track championships across the state.
