Sail away during an enchanted evening in Brisbane
I RECEIVED an email the other day saying I was going on a South Pacific getaway.
My mind rushed to thoughts of waking up to a beautiful island view, looking out across crystal clear water, enjoying a day of snorkelling, lounging by the pool and sampling the best tropical cuisine (and cocktails) on offer.
When I awoke from my daydream, I actually read the email and noticed this fabulous South Pacific getaway was being held in Brisbane. Say what?
But as I discovered, even after growing up around Brisbane, this city still manages to surprise and even though I didn't spend the weekend in Fiji, I enjoyed a unique South Pacific adventure you couldn't find anywhere else in the world.
South Pacific (the musical)
The Tony-award winning Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific is on at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre until January 27.
This Opera Australia production stars four time Gold Logie winner Lisa McCune and acclaimed opera star Teddy Tahu Rhodes.
The popular scores of Some Enchanted Evening and I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair had the packed Lyric Theatre applauding for more, and whistling the tunes all the way home.
But the stand-out performance for me was from Underbelly star Gyton Grantley in his hometown musical theatre debut.
Playing the opportunistic and crafty seaman Luther Billis, Grantley seemed at home playing the comedic clown and was particularly stunning in a coconut bra and grass skirt.
Aria award-winning singer Christine Anu transformed herself into the quintessential Bloody Mary, and without prior knowledge, I would not have picked it was her.
Tickets are still available from the QPAC box office.

GRAB A BITE TO EAT
Brisbane Riverbar & Kitchen
Sitting right on the Brisbane River, this bar specialises in bar food from seared kingfish with ginger, ponzu and miso to snow crab sliders with pickled cornichons on a butter milk bun.
Also, the pomegranate and basil margaritas should come with a warning (they are dangerously delicious).
Sake Restaurant & Bar
Sitting above the Eagle St Pier, this modern Japanese restaurant is out to impress.
I could've spent the entire afternoon there (and almost did) watching the talented chefs prepare individual pieces of culinary art.
