Special honour for Park Avenue Brothers duo
DARYN Watson was six years old when he started playing hockey with Park Avenue Brothers in 1974.
Darrin Madden started a year later.
Fast forward 40-plus years and the men continue to play for the club, as well as fulfilling a host of other duties including coaching and umpiring.
Their service and commitment has seen them awarded life membership, an honour bestowed on them by patron Col Hamilton at the club's 80th anniversary gala dinner.
More than 170 guests attended the dinner that was a highlight of a weekend of celebrations.
Some past members travelled to Rockhampton from as far afield as the Gold Coast and Mount Isa.
In his opening address at the dinner, club president Robert Sweeney acknowledged the hard work done by those involved in the club and the wonderful memories it had provided.
Former Rockhampton MP and player Robert Schwarten provided a vivid recollection of his playing days during the late 1960s and praised the families who held the club strong during that time.
Every member of the club's A1 men's premiership winning team from 1987 was at the dinner. These players formed the basis of the teams that also won premierships in 1985, 1986 and 1988.
Sweeney said it was a fantastic celebration and a night to remember.
"Everyone should be very proud of their association with this hockey club," he said.
