Teen's rising to challenge in senior ranks
KARTING: Joel Jamieson has come a long way since he received his first kart for his seventh birthday.
The teenager, who is the reigning state champion in the KA3 juniors, has recently made the move to the senior classes and is fast making a big impression.
In Round 2 of the Queensland championships raced in Rockhampton, he finished second in the KA3 senior lights and third in the Tag 125 lights.
This weekend, he is bound for the Gold Coast to compete in the invitation-only Race of Stars and a fortnight later he will compete in the CQ Series final in Gladstone.
Dad Mark said Joel was relishing the new challenge.
"He's only 14 and he taking on the big boys and already having some success,” he said.
"He thrives on the competition, I think.
"To be a fast kart driver you need to be smooth and Joel's very smooth.”
Karting has taken Joel all around the country.
"Over the past seven years we've been everywhere - the Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria multiple times. We do get around a fair bit,” Mark said.
"I drove for a couple of years but I realised I wasn't as good as Joel so I'm putting all my efforts into him. I really enjoy watching him go fast.
"You want to win every race you go to obviously, but Joel just loves competing.”
