The first step to saving lives

THE Emu Park Surf Life Saving Club continues to produce the goods.

In recent times the club has successfully hosted a State Title and more recently the Wide Bay Capricornia Title while continuing to produce talented young athletes to compete at those events.

Some of those competitors have now received their certificates to prove Emu Park is a club that is not solely about producing participants in beach sports.

Recently 20 of the club’s junior lifesavers received their Surf Rescue Certificate while another 16 from the under-13 age group gained their Resuscitation Certificate at Emu Park.

The awards are the first step for the enthusiasts to become a fully qualified lifesaver and being able to wear the iconic Red and Yellow Cap.

Club captain Steve Rye and junior training officer Janet Spark presented the lifesavers with their patrol uniforms.

Rye said it was a fantastic achievement and the kids involved were a credit not only to themselves but also their age manager John Auriac.

Rye said more than 70% of resuscitation cases recorded by lifesavers are conducted outside of the beach environment.

“It’s certainly a great skill to have but hopefully you will not have to use,” he told them.

To gain their award the Juniors had to complete a 200m swim in the pool in under five minutes, complete a workbook which tracks training, demonstrates fitness by a run-swim-run (100-200-100m) in five minutes; complete simulated rescues, stinger drag, signals plus resuscitation and first aid.

They will now be placed onto the patrol roster with senior lifesavers to continue developing their skills before training for the bronze medallion.
