Woolies revamp a $10m winner at Big Top

A $10 MILLION renovation of the Woolworths supermarket in Maroochydore's Big Top shopping centre has been hailed as the company's largest financial commitment to any single store in Australia.

The refurbished store will be officially opened this morning with a ribbon cutting shortly before the doors open at 8am.

Reed Property Group this week announced the sale of the Big Top complex for $85 million and the company's Head of Development, Jay Emmerton, said the supermarket's refit was a significant investment by Woolworths and reinforced the decision to redevelop the centre.

"Locals have really warmed to our unique concept and we are on track for around 2.4 million customers this year, which will be a tremendous achievement considering that Woolworths has been under redevelopment for the first six months of the year and we still have a few more retail tenancies to fill," Mr Emmerton said.

"From our perspective, it's great to be able to provide locals with so much choice and a unique point of difference in their shopping experience and going by the foot traffic we have generated so far."

Refurbishment of the Big Top Woolworths store has seen it increase in size to a total floor area of 3259sq m, making it one of the largest supermarkets on the Sunshine Coast.

"The staged approach to the refurbishment meant that a number of internal changes were required to the store and while this may have been an inconvenience to some shoppers, I am sure they will be thrilled with the end result as the store looks fantastic," he said.

Big Top Woolworths store manager Racheal Moila said a major focus was on supporting local producers and suppliers.

"Almost 100% of produce is from Australia and we have in excess of 25 local suppliers who range from Nutworks, Pinata Farms, Noosa Natural Chocolate Company, Maleny Cuisines, Queensland Yoghurt Company, Country Chef and Homestyle Baking," she said.

"We will have some on hand to meet customers at the opening and will continue to host displays and tastings in store during coming weeks.

"Customers can meet the local suppliers, understand exactly where the product is sourced and have confidence the product they buy from Woolworths Maroochydore Big Top is local."
